Samantha Orroth’s decision to pursue a nursing degree was inspired by her own mother’s job as a burn-unit nurse. Her goals, she says, are to make meaningful connections with and provide empathetic care for all her patients.

Orroth is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Society of Nursing, serves as a student ambassador at Marieb, where she leads tours and assists with programs and events, and is secretary of the Student Nursing Association, where she helps organize and participate in charity events such as the Walk to Defeat ALS and the Rays of Hope Walk to raise money for breast cancer research. She also volunteers at the Boston Marathon and with the UMass Special Olympics club, where she facilitates social activities for special needs children and provides a safe and inclusive environment for them to make friends and interact.

Orroth has a twin brother studying at UMass and a younger sibling who is also in college. To help alleviate the financial burden on her parents, she has worked at the Office of Undergraduate Admissions as a tour guide and served as a medical assistant at Massachusetts General Hospital in Thoracic Surgery and Primary Care.

She is incredibly grateful for the Mary A. Maher Scholarship and feels it “alleviates a substantial portion of the financial burden associated with my education, allowing me to focus more fully on my studies and patient care without the added stress of working additional hours outside of my clinical rotations. It also enhances my ability to engage more deeply with my studies and participate in extracurricular activities related to nursing, such as workshops and seminars, which are crucial for my professional development.”
